Dear
Class of '57: It's been a while since much activity has
occurred on this website; yet; momentum is gathering as
the fateful dates of our 50th Reunion approach, June 14-17,
2007. Thus, please begin using this website much more
actively to post comments, mark important life events
and document plans for attending the Reunion.
Note
that the "Fundraising" section now has some
interesting data available. However, the "Message
Board" needs much more activity, accelerating as
the Reunion nears.
AS
STATED LAST YEAR...."DO YOU HEAR ME OUT THERE????
DO SOMETHING....DON"T JUST SIT THERE!!!!"

Class
of 1957 45th Reunion Planning Committee Report
Delivered
by David Colwell, John N. Sheagren, Lowell Larson and
Charlie Machacek at the closing dinner, Saturday evening,
August 25, 2001.
The
Class of 1957 Report was initiated by a cleverly written
song by David Colwell to the tune "There'll Be Some
Changes Made." The rewritten lyrics recognized
President Stephen Lewis as he is retiring at the end of
this, our 45th reunion, year. The "Colwell Lyrics"
are attached. ( see below )
Following
Dave Colwells' excellent performance (no dance), he introduced
John Sheagren, the Class President, who proceeded to make
the following comments:
"Thank
you Dave Colwell for that superb lead-in. My name is John
Sheagren, and I am President of the Class of '57. I am
delivering the Class of '57 report summarizing the preplanning
meeting held here over the last two days. We want you
to know that 19 members of the Class of 1957 (the largest
number from any class on campus this weekend) have very
effectively organized our 45th reunion.
Now,
the Class of '57 is well known for the vitality and virility
of both its women and men. The Class of '57 women have
demonstrated their vitality/virility in a variety of subtle
and delicate ways. The '57 men, however, demonstrated
theirs in one very direct and obvious fashion - the increasing
absence of hair!
In
that regard, we recruited the services of the two most
virile men in our Class preplanning group to illustrate
what very cleverly was selected as the central theme of
our 45th reunion . . . the number 57!
[At
this point, Lowell Larson and Charlie Machacek proceeded
to the stage wearing bright blue "Northfield"
baseball caps. Very formally, they turned in unison to
face the audience, doffed their caps and bowed, revealing
in large blue letters on their balded pates, the numbers
"5," on Lowell, and "7," on Charlie,
to the immense delight of the entire assembly.]
Now,
I am not a numbers person; but in order to deliver this
report, I need to review the complex calculations we went
through. First, with regard to our Annual Fund goal, we
initially set it at $57,000 and then, after considerable
discussion, reset it at $157,000. We are also conceiving
of a challenge grant process wherein several of the members
of the Class of '57 would add at least 57% to all the
money's obtained over the goal of $157,000!
Now
with regard to participation, since we have just short
of 257 classmates to solicit, we performed the following
calculations: we first took the number 257, subtracted
57, giving us a total of 200, and multiplied by .35 (.5
x .7, approximated by adding .5 plus .5, then subtracting
.7), ending up with 70% as our giving participation goal.
Now it would have been a lot easier to have simply reversed
the number "57" to make it 75%, which really
should have been our goal, . . . but it wasn't . . . everyone
with me?
Finally,
with regard to attendance, this calculation was, or would
have been, even easier! So, since we are shooting for
approximately 100 classmates to return for the reunion,
100 just happens to be 43 more than 57, but is really
about 35% of our present class number of 257. But since
we had subtracted 57 from the total above in order to
get the 200 we multiplied by .35 in order to get the 70%
participation goal, we simply took half of the 70% as
our attendance goal and found, amazingly, that that number,
35%, just happens to be the result of multiplying "5"
x "7."
Thank
you very much."
